MANCHESTER, SHEFFIELD & LINCOLNSHIRE RAILWAY CARRIAGES
In the days before the MS&LR transformed itself into the Great Central Railway, much of its carriage stock consisted of stoutly-built wooden 4-wheel coaches from the 1870s. By the end of the 19th Century, Gorton Carriage Works had moved to the production of 6-wheeled stock and the older 4-wheelers were gradually withdrawn from service, several being sold on to collieries and minor railways.
All our MS&LR carriage kits comprise an etched brass body and compensated chassis, full glazing and a detailed interior.
Luggage Tri-Composite Coach. Very fortunately a prototype example of this vehicle not only still exists but has been superbly restored as the flagship coach in the Vintage Carriages Trust collection at Ingrow on the K&WVR. No.176 was built in 1876 and ended its service days with British Railways as a tool van in 1961. The coach has been restored in early GCR livery. Kit Price £60
Passenger Brake Van. These useful little vans accompanied the trains of compartment coaches on suburban services in the 1870s and were retained for parcels traffic by the GCR and LNER. A few lived on in departmental use thereafter. Our kit reproduces the van with etched brass body, duckets and underframe and is fully glazed and compensated. Kit price £50
First class Compartment coach. The First or Composite version of the MS&LR 4-wheel coach divided its 27-foot body into four compartments. This lower seating capacity led them to be amongst the first to be withdrawn in favour of more modern vehicles. Brake/Third coach. The most useful of the Gorton-built 4-wheelers were the 3-compartment Brake/Thirds which could be used individually or attached to either end of a suburban block set. The kit comprises an etched brass body, a compensated chassis, full glazing, all supporting castings and a detailed interior. Kit price £60
Third class compartment coach. The most numerous of the Gorton-built 4-wheelers were the 5-compartment Thirds which could pack 50 seated passengers in cramped discomfort. The kit comprises an etched brass body, a compensated chassis, full glazing and a detailed interior. Kit price £60
